2003 Fratelli Rovero – Vigneto Gustin – Barbera d’Asti DOC Superiore

Vigneto Gustin – A fresh experience

Fratelli Rovero is an organic winery from the famous town Asti which is located in the Piedmont region of Italy. The winery produces four white wines, one sweet wine and seven red wines. Last but not least they manufacture Barbera Chinato.

Only recently I had the chance to try Fratelli Rovero’s Vigneto Gustin which is a red wine classified as Barbera d’Asti DOC Superiore. In 2008 wines classified as Barbera d’Asti DOC have been awarded DOCG status. This only applies wines produced after 2008 though. The Piedmontese word Gustin translates to emperor. Vigneto Gustin is made from 100% organic Barbera grapes and according to the winery’s website the wine aged 12 months in European oak.

Prior to drinking the wine has been decanted for an hour and a half.

2003 Fratelli Rovero - Vigneto Gustin - Barbera d'Asti DOC SuperioreIn the glass, Vigneto Gustin had an intense ruby red color. Alcohol by volume was label listed at 14%. On the nose, the wine had a heavy aroma of redcurrant, a bit of cocoa, some rec cherries and a hint of tobacco. The wine smelled very fresh even though it was already nine years old.

After taking a sip, I noticed immediately smooth tannins, and a strong acidity. Vigneto Gustin was rather dry and well-bodied. My notes read furthermore that the wine had a long finish and that it tasted as fresh as it smelled on the nose. I tasted red fruits and chocolate. The wine was complete and harmonic in all aspects.

Fratelli Rovero’s Vigneto Gustin for around 16.50€. For that price it’s a great buy. I enjoyed the wine very much. Now I wonder how a younger vintage might taste. Wasn’t able to spot any other vintages in Munich but if I stumble over some then I’ll definitely buy a few bottles again. In general I find the Barbera d’Asti wines to be superior over the western Piedmontese Barbera wines around Novara. Vigneto Gustin is recommended. {ratin}
