Another Amarone della Valpolicella DOC from Trabucchi
Trabucchi d’Illasi is a well-known name to regular readers of this blog. Located in Illasi, a small town just outside of Verona, Italy. The winery produces stunning wines including Amarone della Valpolicella, Recioto della Valpolicella, Recioto di Soave, Passito di Garganega and many more.
A review of their “regular” Amarone can be found here. You might wonder why I said regular: Terre del Galante is an Amarone that the winery usually only sells in Canada and the US. I found a retailer in Munich who got the rights to sell the wine in Germany, too.
Terre del Galante’s current vintage is a 2007 and the bottle “only” costs 35€ (i was able to buyit for just 28€). I did not have too high expectations in this Amarone since Trabucchi’s “regular” 2006 Amarone DOC retails for 58€.
The cuvée of the wine consists of Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta grapes. The wine aged in both french oak and in smaller barrique barrels.
Prior to drinking the wine was decanted for 2 hours.
In the glass the Terre del Galante had an intense ruby red color with purple reflexes. On the nose there were a lot of aromas. Red fruits like raspberry and ripe cherry, a bit of vanilla, some chocolate and spices. There was a little bit of oak, too.
Alcohol by volume was label listed at 14.5%. On the palate Terre del Galante was a bit fruity and a little tannic. The wine had a large body and was complex. I tasted ripe cherry, cinnamon, oak, caramel and more. A harmonic combination that conveyed a warming feeling. I had the impression that the wine’s tannins were more aggressive than the ones of the Amarone 2006. The wine might have been a few years too young but hey don’t get me wrong here, the wine was still pretty complete and almost as perfect as Trabucchi’s ‘regular’ Amarone della Valpolicella.
35 Euros for a bottle of Amarone is an amazing steal. Terre del Galante from Trabucchi d’Illasi is a good value Amarone della Valpolicella. Often one simply can’t afford to spend 60€ on an Amarone so that’s when I recommend the Terre del Galante. It costs 25€ less and offers still great pleasures. If you live in the US or Canada you should have no trouble finding this wine as it is only intended to be sold in North America.
