A few days ago I was able to get a few wines from the “BioSüd” organic food fair. The BioSüd was held in Augsburg, Germany. One of these wines was a bottle of the new 2009 vintage Terra S. Giovanni from the winery Valle dell’Asso. Located in Galatina. Puglia, Italy they produce a total of 14 wines. The town of Galatina is within the famous Salento area which is known for great wines like the Primitivo del Salento.
Terra S. Giovanni is made with only the finest Primitivo grapes and therefore it is classified as Primitivo del Salento IGT. The wine aged twelve months in stainless steel tanks and another six months in the bottle. Alcohol by volume was listed on the bottle with 14%.
The wine has a garnet-ruby-red color. On the nose there was a heavy aroma of blackcurrant, a bit of red fruits and a little bit of spices.
On the palate Terra S. Giovanni is dry and fruity. The high amount of alcohol causes a pleasingly warm feeling. There were some strong tannins, too. I found the wine to have a persistently long finish.
Since I got this wine from the BioSüd fair I’m not sure for how much it retails. Nevertheless it’s a good wine that I recommend to try.
