Wine Quiz #5 – Solutions

Here are the solutions to this weeks wine quiz.

Question 1
From what region comes the famous Prosecco di Valdobbiadene?
Correct answer: C – Trentino-Alto Adige

Question 2
Which of the following are not dessert wines/sweet wines? Somehow I messed up here and forgot to add the word not when posting the quiz. I later fixed it and it looks like nobody answers the quiz before I fixed it

Correct answers: B and C – Ripasso di Valpolicella, Passito di Brunello di Brunello di Montalcino. Ripasso is an Italian red wine from the Veneto. Passito di Brunello di Montalcino does not exist. Passito is always made from white grapes. Brunello di Montalcino is made with Sangiovese (red) grapes. Vin Santo is the most well-known dessert wine from the Montalcino area (and from all of Tuscany).

Question 3
Why is the year 1963 an important date in Italian wine history?
Correct answer: C – New DOC regulations were introduced.

Question 4
Which of the following are not Italian autochthonic grapes?
Correct answer: F – Zibibbo originally comes from Egypt. Some say that the Sicilian Zibibbo is a clone and therefore it’s own autochthonic grape. Therefore you get half a point for answer G.

Question 5
Which winery was named “winery of the year” by the Gambero Rosso 2013 wine guide?
Correct answer: Sella&Mosca (Also known as sellaemosca). A winery from Sardinia.

Bottle Image: 2007 Sella&Mosca – Terre Rare – Carignano del Sulcis DOC. The wine is from the winery of the year Sella&Mosca.

Well I wanted to see whether you guys know that Passito is a white dessert wine and not a red dessert wine. Passito is just a term. Brunello di Montalcino however is no grape and the grapes used for Brunello are red. So at the end there is no Passito di Brunello di Montalcino.
But hey you got everything else right 🙂
