It’s Friday again! If you live in American then I hope you had a great Thanksgiving yesterday. Time for the solutions of this week’s wine quiz.
There were a few surprise in the latest Gambero Rosso guide. Which of the following wines did not win the prestigious “tre bicchieri” award?
A) Fanti – Brunello di Montalcino 2007
B) Banfi – Brunello di Montalcino 2007
C) Le Chiuse – Brunello di Montalcino 2007
D) Tenute Loacker – Brunello di Montalcino 2007
Correct answer: B and D. Neither Tenute Loacker nor Banfi won the tre bicchieri award in the 2013 edition of the Gambero Rosso.
Briefly explain why Sicily is Italy’s largest grape producer but not Italy’s largest wine producer..
Correct answer: Sicily produces a lot of raisins out of the grapes. Another reason why Sicily is not Italy’s leading wine producing region is the fact that the region exports a lot of grapes Northern Italy and to France. Especially if a vintage is “bad” the French need the Sicilian grapes to give their wines complexity. In Northern Italy Sicilian grapes are turned into fortified wine.
Wine planted along the Duero River can come from the following countries
A) Spain & France
B) France & Italy
C) Italy & Austria
D) Portugal & Spain
Correct answer: D. If you know geography then this question was probably pretty easy. The Duero River separates the two countries on the Iberian peninsula. In Portugal these wines are often classified as Douro DOC and in Spain as Duero DOC.
Briefly explain what Slavonian oak is. What is it is used for and where it is from? How does it differ from French oak?
Correct answer: Maybe the most difficult question in this week’s wine quiz. Slavonian oak is type of oak from Croatia. It’s used to age wine just like French or American oak. It’s especially popular in Italy and South-Eastern Europe. In Piedmont many vintners prefer Slavonian oak for their Barolo and Ghemme because the taste of Slavonian oak is quite different than the taste of French oak
How many DOCG wines does the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia have?
